This cushion has a rather special job to do in it's future and the whole story of how it came about is just so sweet and I'm happy to say that the little boy loves it.
The brief was a T-Rex in aqua colours and so I firstly made a card template of a T-Rex and I didn't want him to be scary so he has a soft touch to him which is cute. I then went on the hunt in my fabric stash for appropriate fabrics and matching bits and bobs to send a photo to my client. I do love putting colour boards together which was part of my training in interior design.
When I design I have such fun and I love nothing more than letting my imagination take over. I seem to really be in my element and it really is something that excites me, so much so that hours can pass before I realise what the time is.
As a child I would spend hours in my bedroom designing the layout for houses, it was a real passion! My parents thought I would be an architect but as an adolescent I became more interested in colour and art which progressed into graphic design and interiors. I was actually awful at graphic design, I hate drawing boards and find it boring sat there with special pens and dimensions, it's too ' straight ' for me. So, when I found a passion for painting I really started to unleash something inside of me, very abstract or totally imaginative. I'm hopeless at still life, or quite simply drawing and painting forms, but ask me to draw and paint flowers, shapes and patterns and I'll come up with a masterpiece.
Once I had my dinosaur template I was able to let go with a design around it. I love using fabrics, buttons, ribbons etc as my paint, creating something beautiful out of it all, and so I'll sit for hours with them all and a pair of scissors, moving it all around, trying this and trying that, until I'm happy with what's in front of me.
I did take progress photos which I posted on Facebook as I went along to show my client but I'll just show you the final cushion on here. It's not an elaborate design because it is for a 4 year old, and also couldn't have too much texture due to the nature of it's future job, but it is super cute and the fabrics and colours have fallen into place as if they were always meant to be like that, I love it!
Have a great week-end,
